European Consensus-Platform for Alternatives
ECOPA represents the pan-European umbrella organisation of national consensus platforms on
alternatives consisting of those parties interested in fostering research, development and
implementation of alternatives to animal experiments. These four parties are animal
welfare organisations, industries, governmental institutions and academia. e c o p a
thereby exhibits a new type of non-governmental organisation combining the parties
involved in an area of interest being diverse in their views and nature, but agreeing to
find a consensus.
European
Biotechnology Foundation
The European Biotechnology Network is dedicated to facilitating
co-operation between professionals in biotechnology and the life
sciences all over Europe. The network, which kicked off in early
2009, is run by the European Biotechnology Foundation, a non-profit
organisation based in Brussels.
European Society for Animal Cell Technology
Website of the European Society for Animal Cell Technology. This is a Society which brings
together scientists, engineers and other specialists working with animal cells in order to
promote communication of experiences between European and International investigators and
progress the development of cell systems and productions derived from them.
European Association of Tissue Banks
The European Association of Tissue Banks (EATB) is a scientific, non-profit organization
that promotes cooperation, research and developments in the area of tissue banking in
Europe.
The European Centre for the Validation of
Alternative Methods (ECVAM)
The European Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods (ECVAM) is the reference
centre, at an international level, for the development, scientific and regulatory
acceptance of alternative testing methods aimed at replacing, reducing or refining the use
of laboratory animals and to be applied in different fields in the biomedical sciences.
ECETOC is a scientific forum for chemical
companies to harness their specialist
expertise to research, review and assess the
ecotoxicology and toxicology of chemicals.
The site gives an overview of the scientific
areas, corresponding initiatives (such as
task forces
workshops and
involvement in international initiatives)
and
publications undertaken by this
non-profit, non-commercial organisation.
European
Biotechnology Network
The European Biotechnology Network is

the life sciences all over Europe. The
network, which kicked off in early 2009, is

EU Programs
AcuteTox
The AcuteTox project has set the very ambitious overall objective of
developing an in vitro test
strategy sufficiently robust and powerful to completely replace in
vivo testing of acute
toxicity of chemicals. Anticipated corollary results of this overall
objective are decreased testing costs and improved scientific validity
of the results. In order to realise such an in
vitro test strategy, a
number of building blocks are required.
National societies and initiatives
National Centre for the
Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research
The National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of
Animals in Research (NC3Rs) provides a UK focus for the promotion,
development and implementation of the 3Rs in animal research. The Centre
brings together stakeholders in the 3Rs in government, academia,
industry and animal welfare organisations to facilitate the exchange of
information and ideas, and the translation of research findings into
practice that will benefit both animals and science.
Department of Laboratory Animal Science
the web site of the Utrecht Department of Laboratory Animal Science. It presents
information on international courses and contains several links to sites relevant for the
field of laboratory animal science, animal alternatives, welfare and ethics.
Dutch-Belgian Society
for In Vitro methods
the web site of a new dutch-belgian initiative with the mission to
promote the development, the application and the acceptance of in vitro
models in biomedical research.
Animal Alternatives Centers
ZEBET -
Centre for Documentation and Evaluation of Alternatives to
Animal Experiments
The goal of this scientific institution is to bring about the
replacement particularly of legally prescribed animal
experiments with alternative test methods, to reduce the number
of test animals to the absolutely necessary level and to
alleviate the pain and suffering of animals used in experiments.
ZEBET is responsible for documenting alternatives to animal
experiment, for assessing them and for recommending or also
pushing through their recognition both nationally and
internationally.
Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing
(CAAT)
The CAAT site provides information about programs at the 18-year-old academic center,
which is part of the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. Full-text of the
Center's technical reports, newsletters, and other publications are available there,
as well as details about the Center's history, awards, grant application process,
and current activities.
Cell and Tissue Banking
Cell and Tissue Banking provides a forum
for disseminating information to scientists and clinicians involved in
the banking and transplantation of cells and tissues.
The Scandinavian Society for Cell
Toxicology
SSCT is essentially a small scientific discussion club for Scandinavian
cell toxicologists. The main aim is to meet each year in a Nordic
country (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, or Sweden) to exchange ideas
and to present research at an In Vitro Toxicology Workshop.
Alternatives to Animal Testing (Altweb)
CAAT manages Altweb, the Alternatives to Animal Testing Web Site on behalf of a Project
Team of organizations that promote the use of alternative methods. Altweb is intended to
be an international clearinghouse of news, information, and resources, and includes
publications, databases, journals, and other resources from organizations around the
world.
Institute for In Vitro Sciences, Inc.
The Institute for In Vitro Sciences is a non-profit, technology driven, foundation
dedicated to the advancement of alternative test methods. The Institute functions as a
independent technical and educational resource which strives to coordinate various efforts
taking place in the field nationally and harmonize them with international activities.
