ICCS Best Practice Guidance Workshop: Application of Read Across in Cosmetic Safety Assessment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Content:<\/strong> Join us for an interactive workshop introducing the ICCS Best Practice Guidance (BPG) for read-across. This BPG serves as a comprehensive resource aimed at supporting safety assessors and regulatory scientists in the effective application of read-across into safety assessments. The guidance reinforces key concepts and provides a clear, step-by-step workflow to promote consistency, transparency, and reproducibility in decision-making. Developed through expert consensus, it offers practical advice for the application of read-across in safety assessments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This half-day in-person workshop will include expert-led presentations covering the BPG. Participants will engage with a real-world case study in breakout groups, gaining hands-on practical experience in the application of read-across to evaluate systemic toxicity. Finally, the breakout groups will engage in interactive discussion, allowing particpants to share their perspectives, ask questions, and collaboratively explore challenges and solutions related to implementing read-across in chemical safety assessments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participants<\/strong>: Safety assessors who review read across cases in their day-to-day-work or those who design guidance around read-across. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the case study, participants will be divided into several breakout groups comprising a mix of experts, with each group supported by a pre-designated facilitator familiar with the case study and the ICCS RAX BPG. The presentation will outline the scope of the guidance and describe its key principles, including problem formulation, substance characterisation, analogue or category definition, and evaluation of uncertainty. A Deep Dive into Analogue Selection and Evaluation <\/h3>\r\n

This session provides a focused discussion on how analogues are selected and evaluated in a read\u2011across assessment. It will explain the scientific criteria used to identify suitable analogues, such as structural similarity, shared functional groups, physico\u2011chemical properties, and similar reactivity, focussing on the use of structural similarity thresholds, and matched molecular pairing. The presentation will describe how analogue identification, screening, and evaluation follow a structured and stepwise process. The presentation aims to strengthen understanding of robust and transparent analogue evaluation before the breakout groups are introduced.<\/p>\n\r\n\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n

Systemic Toxicity Case Study: Category Read Across Using Benzoic Acid <\/h3>\r\n

This presentation introduces a systemic toxicity case study that applies a category read\u2011across approach using benzoic acid. The case study demonstrates how the ICCS best practice principles can be applied in a clear and practical way. The session will explain how the category was defined and how substances were grouped using based on structural similarity, shared properties, and expected biological behaviour using both structural similarity index thresholds and Matched Molecular Pairing. It will describe how available data were identified, screened, and evaluated, and how uncertainty was considered.
