The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) has instigated a project to assemble Adverse Outcome Pathways (AOP) describing the course of the Covid-19 disease from the molecular initiating event (e.g. ACE receptor binding) via a series of key events across different levels of biological organisation towards adverse clinical outcomes (e.g. respiratory failure, organ damage).
The aim is to deliver an inter- and crossdisciplinary description of the disease process(es) in a domain that still seems riddled with overspecialisation and research discipline tunnel vision. We argue that Covid-19 AOPs can function as an overarching knowledge entry point to Covid-19 research separating signal from noise and giving scientists the possibility to quickly grasp dependencies between research fields not normally collaborating.
