Prof. Jinhee Choi

Dr. Jinhee Choi is Professor of Environmental Engineering at the University of Seoul and Director of the Chemical Big Data Science AI Research Center. Her research spans ecotoxicology, human toxicology, and computational toxicology, with a focus on integrating mechanistic toxicology and data science to advance New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) and Next-Generation Risk Assessment (NGRA) under a One Health framework. Dr. Choi received her B.S. in Biology and M.S. in Environmental Science from Seoul National University, Republic of Korea, and earned her Ph.D. in Environmental Toxicology from Université Paris-Sud, France, where she was trained as an ecotoxicologist. Her doctoral research linked molecular and physiological biomarkers to higher-level ecological outcomes, an approach that later formed the conceptual groundwork for her research on Adverse Outcome Pathways (AOPs). She subsequently pursued postdoctoral training in human toxicology at a medical school at Seoul National University, focusing on oxidative DNA damage and repair—an unconventional transition at the time that shaped her long-term interest in mechanism-based and non-animal approaches to toxicity assessment. In recent years, her work has focused on explainable AI models for toxicity prediction, chemical mixture risk assessment, and One Health–oriented integration of human and environmental toxicology. She has led multiple national and international projects applying NAMs and NGRA principles to regulatory contexts, including consumer product safety and environmental chemical management. Her research emphasizes transparency, interpretability, and regulatory relevance, aiming to bridge advanced toxicological science with practical decision-making.
She is a former President of the Korean Society of Environmental Toxicology and Health and has also served as an advisory member of the Korean Presidential Advisory Council on Science and Technology, reflecting her leadership at both scientific and national policy levels. Dr. Choi has been recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher in Toxicology (2015–2017)by Clarivate Analytics.
Through her interdisciplinary research trajectory, from ecotoxicology to human toxicology, and from experimental science to data-driven NGRA, Dr. Choi continues to advance a mechanistic, integrative vision of toxicology aligned with One Health and sustainable chemical management.
