Prof. Maria Karlgren
Associate professor Maria Karlgren is the recipient of the 2026 Björn Ekwall Memorial Award in recognition of her contributions to the development of in vitro models for the investigation of toxicity and toxicokinetics, in the spirit of Björn Ekwall’s scientific legacy. Björn Ekwall paid particular attention to toxicokinetics in his work, as illustrated, for example, by his successful efforts to standardise human toxicity doses. Maria Karlgren´s groundbreaking work on the development of completely animal-product-free models for human liver and intestinal toxicity is especially acknowledged.
