The field of food safety assessment is rapidly evolving, with growing emphasis on New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) to refine, reduce, and ultimately replace traditional animal testing methods. As part of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) Strategy 2027, which seeks to strengthen the scientific foundation of risk assessment and integrate innovative methods, it is essential to assess the current role of NAMs in food safety and explore opportunities for their broader implementation. This session, organized by the FoodDrinkEurope network, will examine both the current and potential applications of NAMs in food safety. Experts from public research institutions, industry, and representatives from authorities will share insights into the scientific advancements of NAMs, the challenges of integrating them into food-related chemical risk assessments, and the pathways for their future adoption.
